Drama One

Pre-requisite: None

In this course, students will study the broad areas of acting, stagecraft, theatrical history, stage movement, costumes, make-up, lighting, and pantomime. Students will see full-length plays as well as read and discuss contemporary drama. Students will learn how to criticize and evaluate a play, a movie, or television play. Students will study, learn, and use safety rules and practices in theatre production.

History: Primitive – Middle Ages

Reading: Greek Play (Oedipus, Antigone, Medea); Selections from Everyman

Acting: Pantomime & Theatre Games

Acting: Stage Geography & Blocking

Acting: Theatre Etiquette

Tech: Vocabulary in Shop, Lights, Costumes & Make-up

 

2nd Nine Weeks

Text (Theatre: Art in Action) Chapters 4-6

History: Renaissance – Shakespeare

Reading: Midsummer, Shrew, or Much Ado

Acting: Monologues

Acting: Character Development

Acting: Voice & Diction

Acting: Reader’s Theatre/Radio Plays

Writing: Beginning Scriptwriting

 

3rd Nine Weeks

Text (Theatre: Art in Action) Chapters 7-9

History: 17th Century – Ibsen

Reading: Selections from Moliére, Sheridan or Goldsmith

Acting: Duets & Short Scenes

Tech: Scenic Design, Floorplans & Models

Film & Television (Could also go in last nine weeks)

 

4th Nine Weeks

Text (Theatre: Art in Action) Chapters 10-12

History: Shaw – Modern

Reading: Neil Simon or similar

Musical Theatre

Acting: Extended Scenes and Short One-Acts

Tech: Costumes Design & Make-up
